COE’s Best of 2009 Game Awards!

I Just Wanted To Say Special – GOTY Awards 2009 (December 20th)

Welcome to our ‘Best of 2009 Game Awards’, faithful readers and listeners! While you guys still have until the end of the year to vote for your favorites, the staff of Project COE have decided to finish up our choices and votes for reasons previously touched upon. Our format this year is different from past ceremonies. We’ve decided that a podcast is the best and most efficient way to showcase what the staff voted for. Jarrod Nichol, Justin Joseph, and yours truly are your usual hosts this evening…and as we’ve mentioned in our “About Us” page, you better strap yourself tight for the ride.

Here are the associated show notes of the podcast. Simply skip to the following time-frames for the desired commentary. You can also click on the individual game titles for their respective reviews. If a link isn’t present, then it means that the review is pending or only impressions are up. As always, we’ve deviated with a couple of side topics but this 1-hour-and-47-minute episode is surprisingly on the mark compared to our usual ramblings. I apologize in advance for the slight slip ups, lag-related pauses, and some echoing from Justin’s end. I always tell him to use headphones to reduce these artifacts. After all, we’re all in different parts of the world.

[00:00] Just a brief introduction on where we’ve been for the past month. Life sure loves to get in the way, eh? From hometown disasters to book writing and building renovations…it sure sounds as if we’re in some sort of drama sitcom.

[09:10] I recite the ground rules we’ve established for our staff GOTY nominations and votes. Some of these extend to our readers’ choice awards as well.  I’ve written these points in detail in a previous post, but let’s summarize just to be sure we’re on the main page:

1) How we vote: in order to give each game a fair chance considering our humble staff size, each of us pick our top three games in each category. Top pick gets 3 points, runner-up gets 2 points, and honorable mention is worth one point.

2) Regarding staff nominations, only games we’ve covered and played are eligible for votes: basic written/audio impressions and pending/published reviews of such games count. As such, Assassin’s Creed II, Left 4 Dead 2, DJ Hero, and few more games are absent from our lists. In turn, genres such as “music”, “adventure”, “horror”, “puzzler”, and “strategy” aren’t present in our awards either due to lack of coverage or not enough games under these respective genres. Such is the case with genre awards for readers as well. You can still vote for the games we have not covered, and we do have a special poll about that topic.

Best Game of 2009 that Project COE Didn't Play

  • Assassin's Creed II (PS3/360) (44%, 7 Votes)
  • Left 4 Dead 2 (360) (25%, 4 Votes)
  • Dragon Age: Origins (PS3/360/PC) (25%, 4 Votes)
  • Punch Out (Wii) (6%, 1 Votes)
  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (PS3) (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Rhythm Heaven (DS) (0%, 0 Votes)
  • The Beatles: Rock Band (PS3/360/Wii) (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Final Fantasy CC: The Crystal Bearers (Wii) (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Star Ocean: Second Evolution (PSP) (0%, 0 Votes)

3) Remakes and enhanced ports are not allowed in our staff and reader nominations. We’d like to give original IPs and sequels a better chance of shining instead of old games. Exceptions to these are: Silent Hill Wii, Punch Out Wii, and A Boy and His Blob Wii. These games aren’t remakes per-se; they’re reboots or re-imaginings that are inspired by the classics. As such, they’re more of entries in the series and less remakes. The developers have stated as such and we wholeheartedly agree with them. You can still vote for best enhanced port and best remake in our polls.

Best Remake of 2009

  • Dragon Quest V (DS) (44%, 7 Votes)
  • Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii) (31%, 5 Votes)
  • Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (DS) (19%, 3 Votes)
  • Klonoa (Wii) (6%, 1 Votes)
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Persona (PSP) (0%, 0 Votes)

Best Enhanced Port of 2009

  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (PS3) (53%, 8 Votes)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex (Wii) (20%, 3 Votes)
  • Pokemon Platinum (DS) (7%, 1 Votes)
  • Disgaea 2 (PSP) (7%, 1 Votes)
  • Star Ocean: Second Evolution (PSP) (7%, 1 Votes)
  • Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat (Wii) (7%, 1 Votes)
  • Call of Duty Classic (PSN/XBLA) (0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 15

4) Not throwing everything including the kitchen sink with our staff and reader nominations. For example, to nominate Batman: Arkham Asylum for best Xbox 360 game is both unfair and redundant. That game belongs to our individual “best multiplatform awards”. PS3 exclusives are nominated in “best PS3 game”, and the same goes for the rest of the consoles.

5) Some games flat-out don’t get nominated despite our coverage. Examples are mentioned in the podcast.

[14:20] Side comments that mention our awesome coverage this year. This might be our best year ever!

[17:35] Slight screw up here from my end. Sorry about the long pause. I’m keeping it ’cause I’m lazy and it’s classic!

[18:40] It begins! Handheld awards first. You’ll notice that our typical format of the podcast will be taking turns in talking about the console in general then talking about the games themselves.

Definitely a great year for the DS system. Not a lot of heavy hitters as we point out in the podcast, but the ones released are awesome. Also, lots of niche RPG titles for the system this year.

The PSP is sort of in the same situation as the DS this year. Niche-dominated followed by the occasional epic first or third-party game.

[26:54] Best PS3 Games of 2009! We have a nice discussion going on on how great the PS3 has been this year in terms of exclusives. First-party studios definitely stepped up their game. There’s the occasional third-party exclusive of course, but not as much as the previous years when the war was a lot more heated.

[34:20] Best Xbox 360 Games of 2009! You’re in for quite a surprise in these awards. Justin and I complain about Star Ocean: The Last Hope not getting the deserved spotlight from our staff. The team reflect on a year scarce of Xbox 360 retail exclusives, instead focusing on multiplatform hits. We then talk about why Shadow Complex is the only download game to be nominated in a console award this year. While the winner is definitely a great game, it is sort of weird that a racer is able to nab top guns for once, eh?

WINNER: FORZA MOTORSPORT 3 — 12 Points
Runner-up: Shadow Complex — 11 Points

[41:47] Best Wii Games of 2009! I accidentally switch between 2nd and 3rd place positions. Sorry about that. Anyway, we have a great discussion going on about PS3/360 vs. Wii games. Both are very distinctive markets this year. The Wii’s advantage is the abundance of third-party titles and exclusives, but lack of epic first-party titles lets the system lag behind a bit. Jarrod has been consumed by the high-powered systems this year while his Wii gathers dust. Such is a life of a gamer who owns all three consoles.

WINNER: NEW SUPER MARIO BROS WII — 16 Points
Runners-up: MadWorld, Muramasa: The Demon Blade — 9 Points Each
Honorable Mention: Dead Space Extraction — 5 Points

[49:55] Best Multiplatform Games of 2009! We have a nice discussion about the winner, Batman: Arkham Asylum. Is it the best game adaptation of a licensed property? “Even better than Goldeneye for the n64?” Justin asks. We also shine light on Resident Evil 5, a game that should get more attention despite being released earlier in the year.

  1. You could have told me there was echoing again. I was under the impression that it occurred when my loud-mouth roommates congregate downstairs. My buds were less than five feet away, so I blame you guys for that ;)

Anyway, swell job with this. Keep it up.

  2. Thanks, guys. :)

I think you’ll always have this echoing problem, Justin. It’ll be the same case for me if I don’t use headphones. It’s because of the slight lag so Jarrod’s voice will be heard again from your end when you speak, hence the echoing artifact.
