Star Wars Officially Confirmed For Blu-ray Release – Fall 2011
In what has to be the biggest news of the year for Blu-ray, the bearded one himself George Lucas, announced that the complete Star Wars Saga will be hitting the high-definition format Fall 2011. I’ve added the full press release below, but honestly who really cares about all that. What we know right now is that all six movies will be available in one box set and will include the largest collection of deleted scenes, never before seen special features and more, that has ever been released to the public. This is about as good as it gets kids. Now that we know Back to the Future is hitting Blu, Star Wars is hitting Blu, all that’s left is Indiana Jones and pretty well all the huge box sets will have been released. Naturally there are countless thousand other classics that need to be released, but you know what I’m saying. Any doubters that thought Blu-ray would never catch on, well remember what I told you all back in late 2007, Blu was here to stay. Now it looks like I was right! I’ll have more information as it gets released.

@AppetitePat: Well truth be told, he waited 5 years for DVD. He got burnt bad on LaserDisc, which is why he was so hesitant with DVD. He sure milked the DVD bandwagon for all it was worth though. lol. Now with Blu-ray, I’m sure he was thinking it could either way, become another DVD or become something like LaserDisc. We all know which one it’s taking after ;)
I’m only slightly disappointed with this news as only the completely digital versions of the original trilogy will be making their way onto Blu. It would have been awesome if the first THX-certified versions would have also been included. That way you could have got the unaltered versions and the newer ones included with branching. I’m fairly certain he’ll release another set sometime down the road doing exactly as I’ve said.

I kind of wanted to see the unaltered versions of the original Trilogy myself, and I was kinda hoping that Lucas includes it in the blu-ray set. Too bad. Never got to see those.
It’ll be interested to see those deleted scenes, especially if they’re from the original trilogy. ’cause quite frankly, I can’t stand the newer trilogy. Aside from the film which tied the two together, the two other movies were boooooooooring!

You’re not alone in this thinking. The original trilogy was released on DVD on September 21st, 2004. By comparison, the first LaserDisc release of A New Hope was alongside the VHS in 1985! Now that’s jumping on a new technology. DVD was first released back in March ’97. It took him 7 full years before he jumped on the DVD bandwagon. Blu-ray won the format war officially on February 19th, 2008. That’s when Toshiba left the HD DVD business behind. If you want to get really technical then you can say Blu-ray launched late 2006 alongside the PS3. Yes there were Blu-ray players before, but the mainstream started with the PS3. So if we say 2006 to 2011, that’s only 5 years. That’s pretty awesome, and WAY better than DVD. If we look at when the format war ended though, 2008, and compare that to DVD, we’re getting the entire Star Wars Saga within 3 years of the format winning the war.
Wow, sorry for the history lesson there. I’m a pretty big Star Wars and technology fan. O_O

I had actually settled my mind into thinking this day would never come!
Let’s face it, George has always been the first guy to addapt new technology from laser disc to DVD. Why did he wait so long for bluray I mean comon! He’s always been about the sound quality and it doesn’t get better than bluray!
