Black Ops Makes Serious Bank

Activision just issued a press release which says Call of Duty: Black Ops made a whopping $650 million in sales within five days, that’s $100 million more than Modern Warfare 2. That’s insane!  Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg had the following to say…

There are many reasons for the success of Black Ops, but first and foremost is the fact that our team at Treyarch delivered a truly awesome game, and in the process have established themselves as one of the most talented developers in the world.  There are millions of people all over the world engaging in this community. It’s our job to keep them coming back for more.

This really makes me wonder what will happen with next year’s installment.  Do you guys think this series will cap itself out, or do you think the sky’s the limit?  Let us know, we want to hear from you!

  1. I think they should take a year or two off. I wonder though, could Infinity Ward release a game call Mordern Warfare 3 for EA without the COD in it? Or is Mordern Warfare copyrighed? Anyway, I’m sure they are going to release a successor to MW2 eventually, under a different name or not.

    1. Don’t forget that Modern Warfare 2 initially was only going to be that, but I think Activision told them to put ‘Call of Duty’ back on the label so as to not confuse anyone. Either way, EA has Medal of Honor, Respawn won’t be able to bring CoD there. Activision would never let that franchise go :P

  2. Hahaha, “Well treyarch delivered a good game and established themselves as talented developpers.”

No they didn’t! Infinity Ward did all the work with MW 1 and that’s it! Treyarch copy pasted. I mean, sure they are good devs but they’re getting WAY too much credit.

  3. From what I’ve played Black Ops is a pretty sweet game, but it’s clear that it’s been built using technology formed from the rest of the series. It also doesn’t have all the little detail found in MW and MW2. That said, this is by and far Treyarch’s best work on the series up to this point.

Steven, there’s no way Modern Warfare will make its way to EA. I don’t even think Respawn will make a modern FPS. Rumors are saying they plan to make a more futuristic combat shooter, which is exactly what everyone thinks Infinity Ward is currently working on for Activision. Now that would be an interesting battle to witness.

  4. Nope, I mean Infinity Ward. Activision has restructured the company and there were some rumors suggesting that instead of Modern Warfare 3, they could be working on something like Future Warfare instead. Bungie appears to be working on a persistent online shooter.

  5. It came down to like 30 staff I think. From the senior level to the lower ranks but mostly senior.

    1. Yeah all the top brass are gone, and most of the creative force. The lower end folks mainly stayed behind, and who could blame them really. Now the team has been completely restructured and gearing up for the next Call of Duty, whatever that may be. I’m actually starting to think it may be MW3 after all, just to play it safe.

    1. It seems like the safest move Activision has at this point. Release Modern Warfare 3 and people will eat it up like nobody’s business. I’m just curious to see what Treyarch does then. Will they continue with past history CoD or finally move full on into the future/modern day?
