If you own an iPhone, iPod Touch, or an iPad, then today’s your lucky day. Apple has just released the latest operating software for your i-device. By and far the largest changes pertain to iOS 4.2 for the iPad. The iPad now receives full multitasking, folders, and everything else your shiny iPhone 4 has had since launch. Game Center also finds its way to the iPad with this update. Perhaps the most significant update for those of us that use our iPads for work purposes is the AirPrint feature. This allows the iPad to join a network printer. You can imagine how useful something so basic would be.
Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs had the following to say.
iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season. Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.
Find My iPhone is also available for download from the App Store for free, instead of being linked to a MobileMe account. This is great news as it allows users to locate their missing i-device from anywhere so long as it is active. You can even remotely disable your device in case it gets stolen/lost, etc. If you misplace it, just activate Find My iPhone and you’ll see its location via GPS on your computer. I’ve used it before and believe me it’s a life saver.
iPhone and iPod Touch users will notice only a few updates, mainly coming from AirPrint and AirPlay, the new i-device to Apple TV streaming service. It costs nothing and transforms your i-device to a perfect accessory for your Apple TV. You can stream music, movies, and pictures. Naturally you have to own an Apple TV in order to make all this work, but hey, at least it’s free.
For all you iPhone 3G users out there, Apple has once again given your phone a little boost in speed thanks to a more refined system core.
