Parent Talk: Vanguard II is rated E for everyone and featured mild fantasy violence.  It’s another spaceship shooter and is mild enough for anyone to play.

Plays Like: Any old-school Shmup.

Review Basis: Played through the game.

The Scoop:

In 1984 SNK released a sequel to the highly successful arcade classic Vanguard.  They shockingly called it…Vanguard II.  It was actually quite different than the original.  The sequel is a top down free-roaming shooter that features extremely clumsy controls, at least the PSP and PS3 Mini version.  I have never played this game in the arcades so I’m not entirely sure what the original control scheme was, but if it’s similar to this there’s a good reason I had never heard of the game before.

Of all the classic games SNK has released on the Neo Geo Station, this is one I don’t think very many people are going to be into, even at $3.  In order to attack ships coming in behind you, you first have to completely rotate your ship 180 degrees and then fire.  Yeah, not exactly easy to do when the enemy ships are faster than you and move erratically.

It’s your $3, but I know for my money I’d rather go play some T.N.K. III.
