May NPD Numbers Surprise No One

Diablo III.  Ok you can stop reading now.  Surprising absolutely no oneDiablo III is the highest selling game of May.  What might surprise you is the last time a PC-only game topped the charts was way back in July 2010 when a little game called StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty was released.  There must be something about this Blizzard company I hear so much about ;)

Getting serious for a moment, here are the top selling videogames for May 2012.

  • Diablo III (PC)**
  • Max Payne 3 (360, PS3, PC)**
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (360, PS3)
  • Prototype 2 (360, PS3)**
  • NBA 2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, PC)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (360, PS3, Wii, PC)**
  • Sniper Elite V2 (360, PS3)
  • Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC)**
  • Dragon’s Dogma (360, PS3)
  • Just Dance 3 (Wii, 360, PS3)

**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

As always we have no idea exactly how well these games performed, but we do know a little about hardware sales.  All hardware except for the 3DS saw decreased sales compared to May 2011.  The 3DS actually increased by 17% so congrats 3DS!  Microsoft says the 360 sold 160,000 over the month of May, and that represents a 45% share of all current-generation consoles being sold in North America.  May also marks the 15th consecutive month where the 360 has kicked ass.  So congrats are in order for MS as well.

I’d love to report more on the subject, but that’s kind of hard to do without having any official numbers.  What I will say is that the 3DS continues to do really well, Diablo III is apparently awesome, and Microsoft is really gaining more and more momentum in their quest to dominate the North American audience.  I’m telling you right now people, when it comes time for Microsoft to launch their next-gen system, don’t be surprised if they absolutely dominate this region.  All the signs are there for it to happen.

What do you guys think of all this?

  1. I’m really happy that Dragon’s Dogma is on that list. I’m really interested in the game and it looks like so much fun. I’m really eager to read David’s review of it, once he gets around to it. I think he’s put about 30+ hours into it so far, I’ve watched him play a bit and it looks pretty great.
