The Xenoblade Chronicles Highlight Reel Continues!
You think I was done with this game and recording its side quests? Far from it! Bit by bit, Xenoblade is getting to be one of my favorite games of all time and currently holds my personal record of the most time I’ve spent playing a game — I’m now over 160 hours in and I’ve just gotten closer to the ending of the main quest, while I still have a sizable chunk of side-quests that I need to complete. Enjoy this latest batch of videos and if I get enough feedback, I’ll make more. The last batch had quite a few standouts, with one video that has over 1000 views. Not bad if I do say so myself.

True, Jarrod. I would really see myself playing an MMO after being this deep into Xenoblade. Even I, who has never played an MMO, immediately noticed how this game is influenced by the genre…which is pretty big for an offline Japanese RPG. I love how involved I am with the stories of these NPC characters. My only turn offs from MMOs at this point is the subscription fees, PC centric controls and the need for a PC, and how addicted I’ll become as soon as I get into it. I don’t want MMOs to take over my time with console gaming, you know. So far though, I’m eying two MMOs that I might get into when they’re released: Final Fantasy XIV for the PS3 and Dragon Quest X.
I’m assuming you left Xenoblade on hiatus last time we talked about it. It is truly one of my favorite games and RPGs now. Can’t believe I put this amount of hours into it.

I’m over the 100 hour mark, but put it down when I got busy with other games I needed to review or simply wanted to check out.
The biggest hurdle facing MMOs is exactly what you said, subscription fees. Thankfully virtually all the big MMOs out there now are free to play. WoW is free up until level 20 I believe, same for The Old Republic, and Guild Wars 2 is completely free post purchase. Why the subscription model works though is for the post-game content. WoW has had 12 seasons of Player versus Player content, they add new dungeons and raids throughout the year, and constantly add new elements to the game, all for no additional cost.
Most MMOs are also very light in terms of required hardware. My old MacBook Pro can easily play WoW for example. Any two year old PC could likely max out a game like that. As for the controls, they take some getting used to, but it’s for the best considering all the items and stats you slowly get introduced to.
Finally, I don’t think you need to get obssessed with any one in particular. I log on everyday, but some days I might only see what’s going on before going back to my other games I’m working on. Currently I’m spending a ton of time on WoW simply because of the new expansion. I created a brand new character, a Pandaren Monk and have been loving the new class, lore and everything else offered. Blizzard even introduced a pet battle system that works exactly like Pokémon, and that has been taking up some of my time too. Bottom line is, I’ve been keeping busy.
As for FF and DQ, I can’t really say too much yet because I’ve only seen bits and pieces of either title. What I can say right now is that they don’t come with a lot of the modern elements found in newer MMOs, and even the 8-year old WoW. In order to get the most out of DQ for example, you really are going to have to become a social fanatic in order to group up for large scale events.

That’s pretty amazing Ahmed. Given how similar the structure of Xenoblade Chronicles is an MMO, I think you should seriously consider giving one a spin. The idea is more or less exactly the same, you have tons of different quests to take part in, most of which you do on your own, but the spin is that dungeon are 5-person group affairs. You don’t even need to know anyone because of the ultra handy dungeon finder, which automatically pairs you up. If you want to dig a little deeper there are 10-man and 25-man raids, which are sort of like extremely large dungeons that require severe cooperation in order to survive.
The more you talk about this game, the more I think you could be a really big fan of MMOs, much like I have become. I have been playing World of Warcraft every single day for the past few months, albeit along with other stuff (LBP Vita review incoming soon ;)). I just love how you can pick and choose exactly what you want to do, much like how this game works.
