Breaking – Disney Buys Lucasfilm for $4 Billion
You read the headline correctly, George Lucas, who was the 100% owner of Lucasfilm, just sold the company and all its properties for a whopping $4 billion to Disney. Disney has even announced a brand new Star Wars movie, which will be released in 2015, titled Star Wars: Episode 7. Needless to say this will have ramifications felt in the videogame industry and beyond.
What do you guys think about this? Disney has already said they have major plans for the franchise, and other existing Lucasfilm franchises. Does that mean another Indiana Jones could be in the works?

Shock. Weirdest news I’ve heard since they’ve bought Marvel. Man…Disney is a force to be reckoned with, pun intended.
I’m baffled by the negativity surrounding the announcement of a new trilogy set in the future. Seriously, Star Wars fans? Isn’t that what everyone wanted? New movies that aren’t creatively controlled by George Lucas?

Ahmed I think people are lost. These same people complaining are the ones who loved Avengers. Disney was responsible for that movie. They left Marvel alone, letting them do as they pleased. The same is true here, Lucasfilm will still be run as Lucasfilm, just like Marvel Studios is run by Marvel Studios. Yes the higher ups have to report to the Disney CEO, but that’s about as far as it goes. Look at how magical this system has worked with Pixar and Marvel. I see no reason why this shouldn’t work here as well.
Lucasfilm will now be run by Kathleen Kennedy, one of the most powerful and successful female producers in Hollywood history. She’s also Spielberg’s right-hand. Together they Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Schindler’s List, she was the executive producer on the Gremlins and Back to the Future series, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the Goonies and E.T. Somehow I think Lucasfilm is in good hands.
What Star Wars needs now is a new direction, a new focus, and yet someone who knows the series roots and is in sync with George, and Kathleen is the person. Fanboys will be fanboys and haters will be haters, but doing a little research into finding out how the company will be run, and by whom changes the story completely. We’re getting one of the very best people in the industry spearheading this new direction, and personally I couldn’t be any more excited.
