Viral Video of the Day: Cover of Space Oddity…in Space!

Space Commander Chris Hadfield has been making a name for himself in social media during his 5 month trip in the International Space Station. As the first Canadian to command the ISS (something that our resident COE staffers are definitely proud of), he has pushed to make space look really cool with various pictures and videos on his daily activities.

Just before landing safely on Earth yesterday, he completed shooting and recording of the first music video in space; a cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” from 1969…which has very fitting lyrics. The music video displays Commander Chris’ excellent musical talents; great singing voice and nice guitar strumming to boot. He even had a hand in directing by recording himself on various locations in the ISS, producing some very beautiful and exciting shots. All in all, you could see why this person has gone viral. Amassing over 6 million views in two days, Commander Chris is on his way to social media stardom and rightfully so. Many people, me included, haven’t even heard the original track before…so you could say that he has done a fine job in bringing it over to a new generation. This song is officially in my head as of late.

  1. Yup, we’re all very proud of Chris. He’s become something of a national celebrity since he took command, and it’ll be interesting to see what he does now that he’s safely back on Earth.
