Here’s A Letter From Sir Howard Stringer (Main Man At Sony)

I thought all of you who have ben suffering from the PSN outage may want to hear what the main man at Sony has to say to all of you.

Dear Friends,

I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you.

Let me assure you that the resources of this company have been focused on investigating the entire nature and impact of the cyber-attack we’ve all experienced and on fixing it. We are absolutely dedicated to restoring full and safe service as soon as possible and rewarding you for your patience. We will settle for nothing less.

To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely. We are also moving ahead with plans to help protect our customers from identity theft around the world. A program for U.S. PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers that includes a $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user was launched earlier today and announcements for other regions will be coming soon. They also plan to open a brand new factory and the building material transpotation must be insured by building material transport insurance company.

As we have announced, we will be offering a “Welcome Back” package to our customers once our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are up and running. This will include, among other benefits, a month of free PlayStation Plus membership for all PSN customers, as well as an extension of subscriptions for PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited customers to make up for time lost.

As a company we — and I — apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack. Under the leadership of Kazuo Hirai, we have teams working around the clock and around the world to restore your access to those services as quickly, and as safely, as possible.

I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It’s a fair question. As soon as we discovered the potential scope of the intrusion, we shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and hired some of the best technical experts in the field to determine what happened. I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had — or had not — been taken.

As a result of what we discovered we notified you of the breach. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are upgrading our security so that if attacks like this happen again, our defenses will be even stronger.

In the last few months, Sony has faced a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But now we are facing a very man-made event – a criminal attack on us — and on you — and we are working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world to apprehend those responsible.

In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony.

With best regards,
Howard Stringer

Nintendo Releases Official Statement On Wii Successor

Here’s a brief update for you on the story Ahmed posted this morning.  Read the official statement Nintendo released to media publications.

So there you have it, the Wii’s successor will be officially revealed during this year’s E3 expo.  I certainly hope Nintendo didn’t rush this console out simply to please developers.  The reason I say this is because I want top quality launch titles and a robust piece of hardware.  The last thing anyone wants is a recap of the Xbox 360’s launch.  Remember that?  Yuck!  Boy did that platform expand afterwards, but when it originally hit…yeah…let’s not talk about that anymore.

I’ve already talked about several features rumored to be featured in the next Nintendo console, but as always I’d love to hear what you all think.  Now’s the time for rumors and speculation, and one of you needs to convince Ahmed to make his predictions as he’s almost always right or very close to what the companies actually announce.

We’re waiting to hear from you, Ahmed!

Valve today announced that Portal 2 — the sequel to the ground-breaking title that won over 30 game of the year awards, despite missing its original ship date — will now be available the week of April 18th, 2011. This two month slip not only marks the shortest delay in Valve’s proud tradition of delays, it represents the approaching convergence of Valve Time and Real Time. Though this convergence spells doom for humanity, it will not affect the new Portal 2 release date.

Fable III Wireless Controller Announced

Microsoft just passed along this quick press release, which details information about a gold-colored Xbox 360 controller.  Not much else to get excited about at this point.  I’ll try and grab a picture of the controller, and will update the post accordingly.

The “Fable III” Limited Edition Wireless Controller Puts the Power in Your Hands

This October, “Fable” fans will get the chance to control their own destiny in “Fable III” with the stunning new “Fable III” Limited Edition Wireless Controller for Xbox 360. The golden cloaked controller features one-of-a-kind artwork created by Lionhead Studios and is steeped in “Fable” lore befitting any king or queen in the making. The “Fable III” Limited Edition Wireless Controller begins shipping to retailers on Oct. 5, just in time for the Oct. 26 launch of “Fable III,” while supplies last. Outfitted in collectible packaging, the controller comes with an Xbox LIVE token for an exclusive in-game downloadable tattoo set to further customize your hero’s appearance.

Feel the power of a monarch in your hands as you reign over Albion with benevolence or utter contempt. The “Fable III” Limited Edition Wireless Controller is a direct tribute to one of the core ideas behind the latest iteration of the franchise, bringing to life the regal crown of Albion – one of the many incredible pieces of concept art created during the production of “Fable III.” The hand-painted artwork wraps to the contours of the distinctive controller to create the perfect fit as fans journey from rebel to ruler in “Fable III,” whether riding solo in this action-adventure experience or with another revolutionary by your side in dynamic couch co-op or over Xbox LIVE.

“Fable III” sets the stage for an unparalleled action and adventure experience, in which you will be called upon to lead a rebellion against your brother, the tyrant king Logan, and rise up as the new ruler of Albion. Take part in all the action, drama and humour as you’re propelled into a rich and engaging story, featuring a unique cast of characters around you.

“Fable III” will be available in a Standard Edition and Limited Collector’s Edition for Xbox 360, and is available now for pre-order at participating retailers. With the all-new character creator tool at xbox.ca/fable3, called the “Fable III” Villager Maker, fans who pre-order the game can create and bring their personalized villager to life. The in-game villager will deliver to your hero a thrilling new quest and 1,000 gold in fortune.

You’ve got to love the quote about power in your hands. Reminds me of “Now you’re playing with power…SUPER POWER!” Now those were the days.

Microsoft Blows The Lid Off Windows Phone 7 – A Phone With Xbox Live Achievements

I think it’s time our very own Steven Lacroix enters the smartphone buying business.  He’s by far the most addicted fan of the achievement system here at COE.  Today Microsoft revealed the line-up of titles it has being prepared for its latest software for smart phones, Windows Phone 7 series.  I already talked a bit about this in my previous phone article, but this time around we have even more information.  I’ve compiled everything together into one nice long press release, thanks to MS.  The information is from Gamescom 2010, which is going on right now in Europe.  Thanks to the time zones, I’m only getting this information now though.  Anyways, what do you all think of being able to add to your Gamerscore via a phone?  Pretty nuts no?

With Xbox LIVE and a Blockbuster Title Lineup, Windows Phone 7 Marks a New Era in Mobile Gaming

First wave of Xbox LIVE titles from award-winning publishers announced for the launch of Windows Phone 7.

The Games You Want, Played When and Wherever You Want Them

In a sea of games, apps, gadgets and gizmos, the biggest obstacle can be finding the game that’s right for you. Only Windows Phone 7 has a Games hub featuring Xbox LIVE, creating a different kind of mobile gaming experience that puts the games you want front and center. Xbox LIVE games on Windows Phone 7 will be specially selected from the top names in mobile, PC and console game development, making the best mobile games even better, thanks to Xbox LIVE. With try-before-you-buy demos, Xbox LIVE leaderboards, turn-based multiplayer, Achievements and more, Windows Phone 7 brings the quality, consistency and community of the Xbox experience to gamers on the go.

Windows Phone 7 also will be supported by content from Microsoft Game Studios (MGS), providing strong first-party gaming titles and intellectual property for the phone. For Xbox fans, this means that Windows Phone 7 will offer companion titles to familiar names, such as “Halo: Waypoint,” and “Crackdown 2,” extending the experience of their favorite Xbox 360 franchises.

“Windows Phone 7 is the launch of a major gaming platform for Microsoft,” said Matt Booty, general manager of mobile gaming for MGS. “Just like we’ve done with Xbox 360, our charter is to push the envelope and deliver definitive games that maximize the platform. We will have an incredible lineup of MGS titles, and that’s just the beginning.”

The most creative minds in game development are bringing the biggest franchises to Windows Phone 7. The first wave of launch portfolio titles includes Xbox LIVE games from the likes of Gameloft, Konami Digital Entertainment, Namco Bandai, PopCap and THQ. Whether you choose to play a gem of a puzzler with “Bejeweled™ LIVE” (PopCap), bring down the house with “Guitar Hero 5” (Glu Mobile), fight off a destructive alien invasion in “The Harvest” (MGS), paint your way out of a corner with “Max and the Magic Marker” (PressPlay) or defend your city in “Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst” (MGS), the first wave of games announced in the launch portfolio of Xbox LIVE games on Windows Phone 7 has something for every mobile gamer:

Star Wars Officially Confirmed For Blu-ray Release – Fall 2011

In what has to be the biggest news of the year for Blu-ray, the bearded one himself George Lucas, announced that the complete Star Wars Saga will be hitting the high-definition format Fall 2011.  I’ve added the full press release below, but honestly who really cares about all that.  What we know right now is that all six movies will be available in one box set and will include the largest collection of deleted scenes, never before seen special features and more, that has ever been released to the public.  This is about as good as it gets kids.  Now that we know Back to the Future is hitting Blu, Star Wars is hitting Blu, all that’s left is Indiana Jones and pretty well all the huge box sets will have been released.  Naturally there are countless thousand other classics that need to be released, but you know what I’m saying.  Any doubters that thought Blu-ray would never catch on, well remember what I told you all back in late 2007, Blu was here to stay.  Now it looks like I was right!  I’ll have more information as it gets released.

The Summer of Xbox Continues With Tomb Raider and the Guardian of Light

Square-Enix and Microsoft sent over the following press release detailing all the info you could ever imagine on the next Summer of Xbox arcade game, Tomb Raider and the Guardian of Light. It will be available through the Xbox Live Arcade marketplace this Wednesday.  We’ve fallen slightly behind with our Summer of Xbox reviews only because we have only been receiving the review codes when the games release.  Thus, the reviews are delayed.  We’re sorry about that.  Anyways, on with the information.

LARA CROFT AND THE GUARDIAN OF LIGHT RELEASES THIS WEDNESDAY ON XBOX LIVE ARCADESAN FRANCISCO, CA August 16, 2010 — Crystal Dynamics®, a part of Square Enix Europe, is pleased to announce that Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light™ will be available this Wednesday on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft as a part of Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade program.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is the first fully downloadable title from developer Crystal Dynamics as well as Lara’s first downloadable arcade adventure which introduces a franchise first isometric camera and two player cooperative adventure.

“We put everything we could into our first downloadable adventure and we’re very proud of what we have created,” said Darrell Gallagher, General Manager of Crystal Dynamics. “We designed a game that can be played in three ways; as a compelling single-player adventure, as a fun local co-op game and as a wider online co-op experience and we’re pleased that gamers will have the chance to play both single player and local co-op modes on their living room couches at launch, with online co-op allowing gamers to play across multiple couches arriving shortly afterwards.”

There is also a full slate of DLC coming throughout the rest of the year; which includes three gameplay packs focusing on combat, exploration and puzzles and two character packs which allow the player a chance to experience the adventure with other well-known videogame characters. A free update will come soon after launch on Xbox 360 offering online cooperative play (offline cooperative play will be available on August 18) and full leaderboards.

“We believe we have delivered a game which opens up new types of gameplay that will excite not only Tomb Raider fans, but all fans of digital gaming. The launch of Guardian of Light is just the beginning, we have a lot of additional content planned and we will be offering the first DLC pack for the first 30 days for free, exclusively on the Xbox 360®, so that gamers can get a taste of some of the exciting extras we have in store,” continued Gallagher.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light begins with Lara searching for an ancient artifact called the Mirror of Smoke. Upon reaching the mirror, she is ambushed by a mercenary army who steals the mirror and releases an ancient evil named Xolotl. Xolotl proceeds to wipe out the armed force and escape with the artifact. Luckily, the disturbance also awakens the Guardian of Light, Totec. In order to track down and stop Xolotl, Lara must join forces with Totec and ensure the world doesn’t plunge into an age of never-ending darkness.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is available now on the Xbox LIVE Arcade Marketplace for 1200 MS Points and will be available for the PlayStation®3 PlayStation®Network and PC (via Steam) on September 28th, 2010 for $14.99. The game is rated T for Teen by the ESRB.

Fight floating drones, destroy Knagar ships, attack turrets and deal with gigantic worms before they swallow your ship or electrocute you. Access your handy map to avoid getting lost on one of six big levels. Pick up keycards, deactivate force fields, save survivors and collect power-ups. Rearm your ship to use one of six weapons, including the Quark Dispeller, Anti-Matter Thrower and Mega Rockets. Recharge your ship’s battery by flying over heat-bursting volcanoes. Chaos Rings Now Available For iPad

Capcom wasn’t the only one with a new App Store game released today.  Square-Enix just sent over the following press release which details all the info about their HD remix of Chaos Rings for the iPad.  It hits today for $15.99.  On top of that, to celebrate the release of Chaos Rings for the iPad, Square-Enix is offering their App Store games at reduced prices starting right now!  Take a gander at the press release for the new prices, and further info on Chaos Rings.

LOS ANGELES (August 12, 2010) — Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of SQUARE ENIX® interactive entertainment products in North America, announced today that CHAOS RINGS™ is now available for iPad® on the iTunes® Store (www.itunes.com) and App Store™ worldwide.

CHAOS RINGS is a brand-new role playing game (RPG) which was initially released for the iPhone®/iPod touch® in April 2010. The game has earned high praise as a title that stretches the hardware to the limit, boasting a huge adventure and beautiful graphics. As a result, the title earned the No.1 sales spot in 15 countries around the world and is now available for iPad featuring 1024×768 HD support.

CHAOS RINGS is set around a battle tournament called Arca Arena, where teams of two compete for victory and eternal life. Characters gain levels and earn experience points from defeating their foes to upgrade their team’s combo skills, enabling the pair to launch bigger, stronger and more devastating attacks.

The unique story of CHAOS RINGS unfolds based on the pairing of characters that the players choose. By experiencing the story lines of each pairing, the true mystery of Arca Arena will be unveiled.

Featuring a turn-based battle system, players are given the choice between “solo” moves, where they can enter commands separately, or “pair” moves, to execute actions as a team. Working as a “pair” allows the characters to concentrate their efforts for more effective power. Defeating enemy monsters allows players to obtain specific DNA information called “gene,” which players can equip to learn the monster’s magic and special attack moves.
