Here’s A Letter From Sir Howard Stringer (Main Man At Sony)

I thought all of you who have ben suffering from the PSN outage may want to hear what the main man at Sony has to say to all of you.

Dear Friends,

I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you.

Let me assure you that the resources of this company have been focused on investigating the entire nature and impact of the cyber-attack we’ve all experienced and on fixing it. We are absolutely dedicated to restoring full and safe service as soon as possible and rewarding you for your patience. We will settle for nothing less.

To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely. We are also moving ahead with plans to help protect our customers from identity theft around the world. A program for U.S. PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers that includes a $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user was launched earlier today and announcements for other regions will be coming soon.

As we have announced, we will be offering a “Welcome Back” package to our customers once our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are up and running. This will include, among other benefits, a month of free PlayStation Plus membership for all PSN customers, as well as an extension of subscriptions for PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited customers to make up for time lost.

As a company we — and I — apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack. Under the leadership of Kazuo Hirai, we have teams working around the clock and around the world to restore your access to those services as quickly, and as safely, as possible.

I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It’s a fair question. As soon as we discovered the potential scope of the intrusion, we shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and hired some of the best technical experts in the field to determine what happened. I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had — or had not — been taken.

As a result of what we discovered we notified you of the breach. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are upgrading our security so that if attacks like this happen again, our defenses will be even stronger.

In the last few months, Sony has faced a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But now we are facing a very man-made event – a criminal attack on us — and on you — and we are working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world to apprehend those responsible.

In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony.

With best regards,
Howard Stringer

Nintendo Releases Official Statement On Wii Successor

Here’s a brief update for you on the story Ahmed posted this morning.  Read the official statement Nintendo released to media publications.

So there you have it, the Wii’s successor will be officially revealed during this year’s E3 expo.  I certainly hope Nintendo didn’t rush this console out simply to please developers.  The reason I say this is because I want top quality launch titles and a robust piece of hardware.  The last thing anyone wants is a recap of the Xbox 360’s launch.  Remember that?  Yuck!  Boy did that platform expand afterwards, but when it originally hit…yeah…let’s not talk about that anymore.

I’ve already talked about several features rumored to be featured in the next Nintendo console, but as always I’d love to hear what you all think.  Now’s the time for rumors and speculation, and one of you needs to convince Ahmed to make his predictions as he’s almost always right or very close to what the companies actually announce.

We’re waiting to hear from you, Ahmed!

Best Press Release Ever

I love Valve.  These guys are just awesome.  they make some of the best games, trailers and release some of the best press releases ever.  Just check this one out.

Valve today announced that Portal 2 — the sequel to the ground-breaking title that won over 30 game of the year awards, despite missing its original ship date — will now be available the week of April 18th, 2011. This two month slip not only marks the shortest delay in Valve’s proud tradition of delays, it represents the approaching convergence of Valve Time and Real Time. Though this convergence spells doom for humanity, it will not affect the new Portal 2 release date.

Isn’t that just awesome?  I know I said I would stop posting press releases, but come on, how awesome is that? You can’t help but lol at that.

Weekly PS Store Update

It looks like Sony was hard at work getting today’s update ready because it’s already online.  Typically we have to wait a little later than that.  All’s good though, so be sure to check out Shank, which has been getting glowing reviews from just about everyone.  I think I’ll wait until tomorrow to download it, as I still have to finish off the latest Lara Croft adventure.  Not only that, but I have to write that Monday Night Combat review.  Ok, so I’m off to write that review now, I promise.

Maverick Has Your Back Goose!

Paramount sent over the following press release which details the launch information for Top Gun.  For anyone growing up in the eighties, Top Gun was the ultimate flight action movie.  It was bloody awesome!  There I said it.  As for this game, well you take it for a flight and let us know what you think of it.

Paramount Digital Entertainment’s Top Gun Allows Players to Fly Into The Danger Zone as Maverick and Experience All-New Dialogue and an Expanded Storyline Written by the

Film’s Screenwriter, Jack Epps, Jr.

LOS ANGELES – August 17, 2010Paramount Digital Entertainment today announced that Top Gun the video game is now available for download on PlayStation®Network for the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Based on the iconic film, Top Gun is a free-flying air combat shooter that expands the legend of Maverick, Iceman and the rest of the Top Gun flyers through new dialogue and combat scenarios written by the film’s screenwriter, Jack Epps, Jr.

“Jumping into the cockpit and blasting down bogeys to the classic compositions ‘Danger Zone’ and ‘Top Gun Anthem’ is something every ‘Top Gun’ fan has wanted to do since the film’s release,” said John Kavanagh, senior vice president of video games, Paramount Digital Entertainment. “And with the help of Jack Epps, Jr., we’re excited to offer both intense combat and all-new encounters with the film’s famous flyers.”

As Maverick, players will go up against the best of the best at the Top Gun Academy with their Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), Goose. Following graduation, players will take on the Soviets over the Indian Ocean. While engaging in large-scale dogfight battles, Maverick will test the limits of his plane, his new RIO and his wingman, Iceman. Top Gun also features five multiplayer modes, allowing up to 16 players to battle it out online. Top Gun is available for purchase on PlayStation Network for $14.99. Those who purchase Top Gun in the first eight days will receive a free limited edition flight suit for their PlayStation® Home avatar.

“I’ve always wanted to expand the story of Mav and Ice after graduation. In the film, we got to the ending really fast, but the game gives them a few more missions to compete and challenge each other. The Top Gun game is the perfect place for the two best pilots in the world to continue to answer the question:  Who’s the best pilot? And this time they face the top Soviet ace, Ivan. I think the game is a great extension to the movie,” said Jack Epps, Jr.

As Maverick in Campaign Mode, solo players first learn the ropes at the Academy and then progress to active duty, teaming up with seasoned pilots to take down enemy planes over the Indian Ocean. Players will experience the tumultuous new wingman relationship between Iceman and Maverick as they team up to take on the top Soviet ace pilot.

“We strive to provide the best games exclusively on PlayStation Network,” said Rob Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations, Sony Computer Entertainment America. “With seven gameplay modes, including five online multiplayer modes, and a script penned by the screenplay’s original author, Top Gun is incredibly deep for a digital distribution title. It’s a fun, fast-paced air combat game set in the world of an iconic American film, all at a great price.”

It takes a lot more than just fancy flying – Top Gun features seven gameplay modes, two single player and five multiplayer. In addition to Campaign Mode, Top Gun features Horde Mode, where players must show off their flying prowess as they defeat endless waves of increasingly challenging enemies. In online multiplayer, players either enlist in the US Navy or join with their Soviet comrades to go head-to-head with up to 15 other live opponents in five different modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Top Gun, Bombing Run and Capture the Flag.

Players will feel the need for speed in a total of six planes, starting with the US Navy’s F-14 and unlocking five more: the F-16, F/A-18, and the enemy’s MiG-29, MiG-31, and Su-27. Each jet has unique strengths and abilities, with varying levels of speed, destruction, agility and durability.

Top Gun was developed by doublesix, the recent award winner of Spike’s “Video Game Awards” for “Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show” category.

Top Gun is now available to download on PlayStationNetwork for $14.99 and is rated T by the ESRB. It will be available for PC and Mac later this year. As a free gift with purchase, players will receive a free limited edition Flight Suit for their PlayStation Home avatar.

Sony Says: Get Ready For Much More Storage

At Gamescom 2010 Sony announced a wide range of products, and games.  One of the biggest shockers was Mass Effect 2, but we have much more coming up in just a few minutes.  This press release details the various new SKUs the PS3 will be available in starting later this year.  One SKU even includes the Move, but we knew they were going to do that.  Anyways, read up and let us know what you think.

New models include a 320GB PS3Featured in the PS3 Sports Champions Move Bundle and a 160GB model PS3 Core SKU; Consumers Will Have 1/3 More Hard Drive Space to Store Games and Digital Content from PlayStation®Network

FOSTER CITY, Calif., August 17, 2010 – Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC. (SCEA) today announced that the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) system will be offered in North America with 160GB or 320GB Hard Disk Drives (HDD), offering more capacity to download games and entertainment content from PlayStation®Network along with personal digital content, such as music, photos, and videos. The new models will continue to offer the same advanced features and functions of the current models, but with approximately 33 percent more capacity and at compelling price points. This increased HDD space addresses the growing demand for the digital content offered on PlayStation®Network, where more than 1 billion pieces of content have been downloaded as of July 2010.

At $299.99 (MSRP), the 160GB model PS3 system offers tremendous value to consumers and is now shipping to retailers at the same price as the existing PS3 model. As part of the September 19 launch of PlayStation®Move, the new and innovative motion gaming experience that delivers precise, intuitive control, the PS3™ Sports Champions™ Move bundle will introduce the 320GB model PS3 system along with one PlayStation®Move motion controller, PlayStation®Eye camera, a copy of Sports Champions, and bonus Blu-ray game demo disc all in one complete package for $399.99 (MSRP).

“With the launch of PlayStation Move just around the corner, we’re expecting many new consumers to join the PlayStation® family. The PS3™ Sports Champions™ Move bundle provides those families with everything they need to get into motion control gaming at a great value, with the 320GB model PS3 system as the centerpiece of the package,” said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president of product marketing. “Also, as PlayStation Network continues to evolve with exciting new services, the hunger for digital content grows; these larger storage capacities address that demand and encourage consumers to take full advantage of the complete PS3 experience.”

With more than 52 million accounts registered worldwide, PlayStation Network is fueling momentum for PS3 and providing more value to consumers. An integral part of the PS3 system’s rich digital entertainment offering, PlayStation Network is the premier destination for content, with a compelling library of downloadable games, more than 23,000 HD and SD movies and TV episodes, exclusive programming, and PlayStation®Home, a  social game network where users can meet friends and play games. Key games launching on PlayStation Network this year include PixelJunk™ Shooter 2,  and Dead Nation™, as well as PlayStation Move titles such as echochromeii, Tumble, and Beat Sketcher.

For nearly 15 years, the PlayStation brand has been redefining entertainment, fueling innovation and providing more reasons for families to gather in their living rooms. With the recent introduction of stereoscopic 3D gaming and the upcoming launch of PlayStation Move, the PS3 system is set to revolutionize gaming once again. Those innovations – combined with the relentless line-up of blockbuster games launching this year, the built-in Blu-ray player that will be updated for 3D Blu-ray Disc™ movies later this year, and the expanded digital entertainment options on PlayStation Network – truly position the PS3 system as the entertainment hub of the family room this holiday and beyond.

Retailers Go On High Alert!

Yup, it’s a very cheesy title for a news article, but what else was I going to write?  It was right there in the press release so I just stole it.  I’m an amazing journalist aren’t I?  ;)  So, with that out of the way, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days has been officially released for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Windows PC.  If you were a fan of the original, I’d assume you’re pretty excited for this one.  Seeing as I never had the opportunity to give the first one a play-through, I’m asking you all right now, was it any good?

COPENHAGEN (August 17, 2010) — IO Interactive, a part of Square Enix® Europe, is pleased to announce that Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days™ is out now on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC in North America and will be released from August 20 throughout Europe and other PAL territories and August 26 in Japan.

In addition to the highly anticipated release, the studio has revealed details surrounding DLC. Beginning August 31, 2010 three unique packs will be available for gamers worldwide including a Multiplayer Mask Pack, Alliance Weapon Pack and Doggie Bag Pack. Each pack extends the Multiplayer modes by introducing more ‘tools of the trade’ and all-new heist locations.

“Given the history of Kane & Lynch, we expected overwhelming interest, and the initial acclaim solidifies the ever-growing phenomenon and attraction gamers have to the characters and story,” said Niels Jørgensen, general manager of IO Interactive. “And we are proud to be able to extend the experience in the coming weeks with more maps, weapons and toys to heighten the tension and pressure of pulling-off a high profile heist.”

The ground-breaking art direction, relentless action gameplay and innovative multiplayer have received noteworthy praise from the critics worldwide and positions Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days as the standout shooter of 2010.

Fable III Wireless Controller Announced

Microsoft just passed along this quick press release, which details information about a gold-colored Xbox 360 controller.  Not much else to get excited about at this point.  I’ll try and grab a picture of the controller, and will update the post accordingly.

The “Fable III” Limited Edition Wireless Controller Puts the Power in Your Hands

This October, “Fable” fans will get the chance to control their own destiny in “Fable III” with the stunning new “Fable III” Limited Edition Wireless Controller for Xbox 360. The golden cloaked controller features one-of-a-kind artwork created by Lionhead Studios and is steeped in “Fable” lore befitting any king or queen in the making. The “Fable III” Limited Edition Wireless Controller begins shipping to retailers on Oct. 5, just in time for the Oct. 26 launch of “Fable III,” while supplies last. Outfitted in collectible packaging, the controller comes with an Xbox LIVE token for an exclusive in-game downloadable tattoo set to further customize your hero’s appearance.

Feel the power of a monarch in your hands as you reign over Albion with benevolence or utter contempt. The “Fable III” Limited Edition Wireless Controller is a direct tribute to one of the core ideas behind the latest iteration of the franchise, bringing to life the regal crown of Albion – one of the many incredible pieces of concept art created during the production of “Fable III.” The hand-painted artwork wraps to the contours of the distinctive controller to create the perfect fit as fans journey from rebel to ruler in “Fable III,” whether riding solo in this action-adventure experience or with another revolutionary by your side in dynamic couch co-op or over Xbox LIVE.

“Fable III” sets the stage for an unparalleled action and adventure experience, in which you will be called upon to lead a rebellion against your brother, the tyrant king Logan, and rise up as the new ruler of Albion. Take part in all the action, drama and humour as you’re propelled into a rich and engaging story, featuring a unique cast of characters around you.

“Fable III” will be available in a Standard Edition and Limited Collector’s Edition for Xbox 360, and is available now for pre-order at participating retailers. With the all-new character creator tool at xbox.ca/fable3, called the “Fable III” Villager Maker, fans who pre-order the game can create and bring their personalized villager to life. The in-game villager will deliver to your hero a thrilling new quest and 1,000 gold in fortune.

You’ve got to love the quote about power in your hands. Reminds me of “Now you’re playing with power…SUPER POWER!” Now those were the days.

Massive EA Report From Gamescom 2010

EA announced a whole bunch of interesting news today.  Instead of posting a bunch of different posts with boring press releases, I figured it would be more logical to just compile them all together into one long boring post with a bunch of press releases ;)  Truth be told, there’s some interesting stuff in here like being able to be a goalkeeper in FIFA Soccer 11, or the fact that David Beckham is now an EA brand ambassador, whatever that means.  They also revealed the ship date for Dragon Age 2, and announced a couple of special editions for their bigger releases for later this year and next.  Give everything a quick read through and let me know what you think of the news.

Now Fans Can Play as the Goalkeeper in EA SPORTS FIFA Soccer 11

All 22 Players on the Pitch Can Be Human Controlled in Online Team Play

COLOGNE, Germany–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) announced today that EA SPORTSTM has developed a new feature called Be A Goalkeeper for FIFA Soccer 11 that will enable fans to experience the thrill of playing as the keeper, and for the first time in a soccer videogame, will place control of all 22 players on the pitch in human hands. The new feature will be available for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system when FIFA Soccer 11 is available in stores September 28 in North America and October 1 in Europe and Asia.

Chelsea FC and Czech Republic goalkeeper Petr Čech has been signed as the spokesperson for Be A Goalkeeper and will be featured in advertising, marketing and promotional campaigns.

Be A Goalkeeper is a completely new way to play—instead of thinking as a player out in the middle of the pitch, you have to think and react as the goalkeeper. Experience the thrill of the one on one battle, making the great save from a free kick, punching balls safely out of danger, the pressure of the corner, and most importantly, keeping a clean sheet. Be A Goalkeeper features three levels of accessibility with varying degrees of AI assistance—assisted, semi-assisted and fully manual. Fans will be able to compete as the goalie in Career Mode and enjoy a 15-year career or create themselves as the goalie in Virtual Pro 2.0 to learn the position, track stats, complete achievements and test themselves against the best players in the virtual world.

With control of the keeper now in human hands FIFA Soccer 11 will deliver an authentic replication of soccer online with 11 vs. 11 Online Team Play that locks people into the role of a single, fixed player the entire game. Now up to 11 friends on different consoles will be able to select and take control of their own individual players on the same team to compete against up to 11 rivals of another team.

“The phenomenal growth of online gaming and the desire of our fans to be able to play as the goalie was the driving force behind this innovation for FIFA Soccer 11,” said Kaz Makita, Executive Producer, EA SPORTS FIFA. “Friends can play alongside each other in their pro clubs with all 11 virtual players on the pitch human controlled. We have finally replicated football in the virtual world.”

Over 750 million online connected games have been played since FIFA Soccer 10 launched last October and over 350,000 pro clubs have been created that enable friends to compete alongside each other against rival clubs. Pro Clubs is one of the most popular online game modes in FIFA.

FIFA Soccer 11 reinvents player authenticity – on and off the ball – for every position on the pitch with Personality+, and introduces new Pro Passing where pass accuracy is determined by a gamer’s ability on the control pad, and player skill, situation and urgency on the pitch. Plus, experience true freedom in man-to-man interactions with 360° Fight for Possession that transforms physical play from just lateral jostling to full 360° collisions.

Visit http://www.facebook.com/easportsfifa to join the EA SPORTS FIFA Facebook group or visit WWW.FIFA.EASPORTS.COM for more information about the game. New game modes and innovations will be revealed later this month. Screenshots are available at http://info.ea.com.

FIFA Soccer 11 will be available for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, Wii™, PC, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Nintendo DS™, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system and mobile. It will be available on the Wii in North America on Oct. 4. FIFA 11 is developed under the EA SPORTS brand by EA Canada in Burnaby, B.C. The game has not yet been rated.

EA Wields Its Magic Adding Kinect Mode to Its Upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 Videogame

COLOGNE, Germany–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The EA Play Label of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have announced that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows™- Part 1 videogame will have an exclusive KinectTM for Xbox 360® experience with unique challenges that puts more power into players’ hands.

With all of the action taking place outside of Hogwarts for the first time, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 sees Harry on the run with a horde of merciless enemies on his tail. Players will find themselves in unknown territory, far from the safety of the school grounds, fighting for survival at every turn. The new game engine, built specifically to leverage the technology of HD consoles, ensures high definition graphics and intense action gameplay on all platforms while the Kinect experience on Xbox 360 offers exclusive challenges, for either single player or two player co-op, playing as Harry, Ron or Hermione.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 is non-stop action with Harry defending himself against a host of menacing enemies,” said Jonathan Bunney, Vice President and Head of Production at EA Bright Light Studios. “Our Kinect challenges allow players to literally cast magic from the palm of their hand, completely controller free, to enhance and deepen the overall play experience; and, even better, we have enabled a special co-op mode with Kinect allowing two people to fight Death Eaters side-by-side for the first time in any Harry Potter game.”

The Kinect experience in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 gives players the ability to get closer to the action than ever before, using physical gestures to cast magic through the screen and defeat their deadly opponents. In co-op mode, the fluid targeting system and leaderboard scoring add a competitive edge to the excitement.

Under development by EA Bright Light Studio, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 will be available this autumn on Kinect for Xbox 360™, PlayStation®3, Wii™, Nintendo DS™, PC, and mobile devices.

About the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 film

Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction—the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.

Meanwhile, the wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort’s Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Potter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort…alive.

Harry’s only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale—the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks.

Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became “the Boy Who Lived.” No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort.

EA Announces Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Limited Edition

COLOGNE, Germany–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Criterion Games, a studio of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS) today announced a Limited Edition version of Need for Speed™ Hot Pursuit, this holiday’s hottest action racing game. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is bringing the intensity of cops vs. racers to the connected generation. The Limited Edition features six of the world’s fastest cars that players can use to race and chase their friends, right out of the box. Available at participating retailers at the same price as the standard version, the Limited Edition packs added value for speed junkies, while supplies last.

The Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Limited Edition delivers six exotic cars; Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, Ford Shelby GT500, Audi TT RS Coupé, Chevrolet Camaro SS, Porsche Cayman S and Dodge Challenger SRT8.
