Star Wars: The Old Republic Goes Free-to-Play This Fall

Big news for those looking to get into Star Wars: The Old Republic.  EA and BioWare announced today that the popular MMORPG will have its price slashed to only $14.99 sometime this August, and that a new Free-to-Play option will be added to the game sometime this fall.  The new price includes one month of free gameplay. Here are the two options that will be available sometime in the very near future.  EA also says there will be far more updates to the game in the coming months to address player complaints and suggestions.

  • Subscription – A service designed for players who want unrestricted access to all the game features via ongoing subscription or by redeeming a Game Time Card. In addition to gaining access to all game content as our current subscribers do now, subscribers will receive ongoing monthly grants of Cartel Coins, the new virtual currency that will be introduced later this fall. Cartel Coins can be used to purchase valuable in-game items including customizable gear and convenience features that will enhance the game play experience.
  • Free-To-Play – The first 50 levels will be Free-to-Play, with restrictions on access to new content and advanced player features. Some restrictions can be “unlocked” with Cartel Coins.

What’s most interesting about this news is that it proves the MMO landscape is quickly changing. More and more MMORPGs are having a hard time locking in players with monthly subscribtions, with World of Warcraft being the exception.  Free-to-Play has seen tremendous success as of late and I believe this new pricing scheme will benefit those looking to try the game, but are unsure if they want to stick around for the long haul.

So there you have it everyone.  That’s a LOT of bonus content, and much of it has never been seen before.  I’m very excited to see the original trilogy in high-definition so this is one movie collection that I will indeed be purchasing on day one, without question.  Are any of you interested in this new collection, or are you content with your DVDs?  Like Steven would say, I have purchased this collection on virtually ever format it has ever been released on including LaserDisc.  Yeah baby, I’m hardcore!

The Force Is Strong With This One

I already told you that the complete Star Wars saga was arriving on Blu-ray later this year, but now Amazon has started taking pre-orders and we have ourselves an official ship date.  September 2011, mark it down and don’t forget it!  I don’t know about you, but this is one collection I will have in my possession on day one.  You can watch the official teaser trailer for the announcement here.

I simply can’t wait for this collection to get released.  It includes all six movies and a massive amount of never before seen bonus features.  It should be awesome!  If you pre-order now, you can score each movie for around $15 a piece, which is a great deal.

Any takers?

Star Wars Officially Confirmed For Blu-ray Release – Fall 2011

In what has to be the biggest news of the year for Blu-ray, the bearded one himself George Lucas, announced that the complete Star Wars Saga will be hitting the high-definition format Fall 2011.  I’ve added the full press release below, but honestly who really cares about all that.  What we know right now is that all six movies will be available in one box set and will include the largest collection of deleted scenes, never before seen special features and more, that has ever been released to the public.  This is about as good as it gets kids.  Now that we know Back to the Future is hitting Blu, Star Wars is hitting Blu, all that’s left is Indiana Jones and pretty well all the huge box sets will have been released.  Naturally there are countless thousand other classics that need to be released, but you know what I’m saying.  Any doubters that thought Blu-ray would never catch on, well remember what I told you all back in late 2007, Blu was here to stay.  Now it looks like I was right!  I’ll have more information as it gets released.
